S: Why are you doing this?

He slammed his book shut.

E: Because you irritate and I want you to be under no illusion that I may, deep down, like you.

S: We've been through this!

He said, lowering his voice when Madame Pince peered at them around the corner.

S: So there's no need to keep being so...

He was going to say 'stuck up'.

E: What's the matter Sirius? You seem to be taking a long time searching for a word in your limited vocabulary.

Sirius didn't know what had come over him. He knew he had the power to hurt her on the tip of his tongue (oo er), but want sure if he wanted to.

E: Oops. Sorry. Did I give you too much to think about? Are you going to back up then get verbal diarrhoea?

Yes. He could hurt her.

S: I was going to accuse you of being a stuck up, childish princess. But I didn't want to risk another slap.

Evangeline's bottom lip trembled, and she set her jaw firmly.

E: I don't care what you say. You're nothing to me.

She snapped unconvincingly, trying to hide the break in her voice.

S: Oh, obviously.

His words were like steel.

Suddenly Evangeline dipped her head so that he wouldn't notice the tears beginning to rum down her cheeks. One splashed on the table.

E: I'm leaving.

She murmured, standing up and fumbling for her things.

E: You're a horrible, horrible person.

The words were mumbled as she marched, head down, towards the door. Before she got there, she tripped and dropped her things, stumbling to the floor herself.

Sirius instinctively got up to help her. He felt deeply ashamed. He was being a dick and he knew it.

S: I...

E: What, have you got another insult for me?

She asked, not even sounding angry, just sad, weary, spirit-broken. Instead of looking up, she began gathering her scattered belongings.

He knelt to help her, his hair falling over his face.

S: I'm... Sorry.... I...

He had a million insults, a million comebacks. But now didn't seem like the right time.

E: ...Was that an apology?

Her shields were down now. Her voice didn't have that hard, logical edge to it, none of her usual skepticism was present in her words. Her voice was a quiet whisper now, soft and sweet, like the eyes that looked at him through her lashes. It was weird how one minute she could be spitting venom and the next look so pure and innocent and beautiful. Her look would've produced butterflies in any boy's stomach.

Sirius gaped at her, looking similar to a blind man who had just seen the sun for the first time. He shut his mouth quickly. Sirius Bkack was not allowed to be feeling like this. Sirius Black needed to stop wishing they weren't in a library, so he could tell her what he really wanted to tell her.
Of course he didn't quite know what he wanted to tell her. Something that would make her kiss him.

S: Yes.

E: Well... thank you. It seems you do have manners after all.

A smile flickered across her face briefly as she looked at him, even lingering as she looked at the books she was gathering into a pile. Gently she stood and took the books that he had picked up for her, sliding them into her bag.

E: Thank you.

She said quietly, not having lost that innocent look of delicate shyness. And Evangeline was rarely shy.

S: I...

He cleared his throat.

S: See you at dinner.

He walked out of the library.

Evanfeline walked out just after him, slowly.

Amy sat in a love seat, then moved to a couch, angry at herself.

A: God I've been stupid.

Evangeline arrived, sitting beside Amy.

E: Hi. You doing homework, too?

A: Huh? Oh! Yeah.

She got a sheet out of her bag.

A: Nothing too difficult, astronomy thing, remember?

E: Oh, yes! I did that on Friday night.

A: Well. I didn't.

She started labelling moons.

A: So. You and Sirius, eh?

She was joking.

E: Oh, don't. I'm simply here to torture him.

Amy chuckled.

A: He's not all bad you know.

She underlined a key word.

A: He's helped me out of a few situations.
